Petrohagia saxifraga Tunica Saxifraga

PETROHAGIA SAXIFRAGA TUNICA SAXIFRAGA

Petrorhagia saxifraga
Tunica Saxifraga  DROUGHT-WISE
Light green grass-like foliage grows tall, then spills over and blooms a light pink, carnation-like flower for 6 weeks in summer. Cut back after bloom to push new growth and fill in thicker. Very elegant trailing plant that is useful surrounding a border, spilling over a wall or in a meadow.

Tips from Fran
Petrohagia saxifrage is a plant I fell in love with years ago in Holland draping over the famous Piet Oudolf’s stairs.   We walked all over it, even though it was 2-3 feet long. It simply drapes over and looks like a stunning head of hair with pink flowers on the end. I have also seen it grow in limestone in Quebec (above pic) where it stayed tiny and pushed blooms on short 2” stems. I have it growing in the most impossible situation in my garden. It is growing on top of a huge (too huge to remove) piece of cement from our front yard construction. It sits in less than 3” of soil on top of the cement and has been a point of talk for 8
years. It again has won my admiration for one tough plant!
