Additional Comment:
Viola labradorica is one of the few plants that seems to handle animal urine---to a certain degree. I have a maltese that loves to lift his leg on this plant constantly and it seems to withstand it pretty well. However, in this spot, the viola is planted in gravel and gets a daily dose of water due to the containers set around it---so keep that in mind.

Tips from Fran
Viola labradorica is probably the hardiest plant we have in the line going down to zone 2. It is this marvelous clumping viola that reseeds and gives you tones of little freebies everywhere. I love the green/blue and black foliage colors, and then to watch it bloom stunning blue/purple flowers on top... it is just wild! It grows in low light, high light, wet shade, dry shade, in a pot, through a crack, under a tree and around your back-okay I got carried away but you get the picture. If this doesn't grow in your yard, nothing will!!!

* ~This can be used as a beautiful lawn substitute as long as it is used for ornamental purposes, not functional, like croquet.
* ~ I have seen this plant withstand neglected areas in nooks and crannies as well as lonely spots where no watering took place. Is that drought tolerant? I think it can certainly take some drought conditions. How much? Well, I think that is a variable the plant will have to decide.
* ~This plant can take paths, courtyards, patios and garden stairs with ease. However, it grows taller than many of our high foot traffic plants, so that should be something to look at as you are deciding.
